Each year we always enter the AELTC public ballot, we got lucky this year and received notification that we had two tickets for Court 2 for the first day of Wimbledon!

Venus in action
Last year we were also lucky but for the last Friday of the tournament. It was interesting to see the difference between the two days.
Last year we witnessed Andy Murray defeat Janowicz in the semi final on his path to Championshiip a couple of days later. However most of the other courts were empty as the tournament was coming to an end. Don’t get me wrong it was still super busy – but it seemed that anyone who didn’t have a Centre Court ticket was sat on Henman Hill (or Murray Mound – which ever you prefer!) It was absolutely rammed and eventually it was standing room only!
Yesterday being the first day it was quite different – it certainly seemed much busier as a whole as all the courts were in use – all the gangways were busy and there were lots of people queuing for unreserved seats.
As always at Wimbledon, Pimms is flowing on tap and there are strawberries and cream everywhere.
It was hot on Court two and our favourite match of the day was certainly Venus Williams v Maria Teresa Torro-Flor. Venus won. It’s her 72nd win at Wimbledon, she has a phenomenal record bettered only by Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert and Steffi Graf and testament to her endurance despite a continued battle against Sjogren’s syndrome, an incurable disease that causes muscle soreness and fatigue. She was awesome on court, onlooked by her supportive mum and trainer rolled into one!
We watched Brit hopeful Daniel Evans get knocked out – not before fighting back in the last two sets, then rounded off the day with a lovely afternoon cream tea (we have discovered the best place to eat is The Conservatory Kitchen near Court 1, it’s tucked out of the way and not as manic as the other places.) before we wearily got the bus back to Oxford.
It’s a great day out and well worth entering the ballot for a chance of a ticket – or if you are brave you can still buy premium court tickets on the day of play. Be prepared for a long wait though!
We look forward to seeing how the next couple of weeks unfold and are keeping our fingers crossed for Murray!
Whilst we were there we couldn’t help wonder how all the ladies keep their unwanted hair at bay. They all looked super sleek in the latest sportwear….
Maybe a bit of IPL ? – you never know – I mean…. think of all that time they could use to train instead of endless hours waxing and shaving right? Haha….
